The You Award

Awarded to an individual whose unique traits or atypical approach to life merit positive acknowledgement; an award for just being you.

Bob Retrosek, RECIPIENT OF THE 2006 YOU AWARD

NOMINATOR'S STATEMENT
I really know nothing about Bob, the cashier at Shop & Stop, but somehow he makes my otherwise forgettable trips to the market more fun and memorable. I think a lot of people feel this way, given the long lines of people waiting in Bob's lines to check out, while other lines are smaller, or even empty. Bob somehow makes you feel welcome, and he seems to have the uncanny ability to sense just the right tone with each person that will make them feel comfortable with him.

Bob is always smiling, laughing, sometimes even singing, and his warmth and often-witty comments and observations are really wonderful and inspired, and tailored to the person. The elderly ladies really adore him. They leave the store giggling. Bob always wears his red sneakers, is very tall and thin with a beard, salt and pepper hair, and always has a twinkle in his eyes. He must also have great memorization skills, given that not only does he seem to know by heart the price of everything, he remembers his customer's names and always make us feel visible and welcome. He also is so competent that by the time I have managed to fish out my card, he has cashed and bagged everything.

If there were more Bobs in the world we'd all be a lot happier. I would love to see Bob get acknowledgment for doing such a good job, both at his trade, and at making people happy every day.
