Ben Schlossberg, RECIPIENT OF THE 2005 YOU AWARD

NOMINATOR'S STATEMENT
Ben had always been a courageous, almost fearless man who always sought out the unusual. A talented musician who gave concerts while floating in hot air balloons; an amazing swimmer who took the challenge to swim the Bering Strait, Ben never feared taking on a challenge.

I met Ben last year and was immediately drawn to him because of his amazing compassion for others, humility, and a very keen sense of humor. Nine years ago, Ben was told he had a case of inoperable cancer. I did not find out about his illness until very recently.

After getting over the initial shock of his diagnosis, Ben made it a point to learn all he could about his case. He moved to California for a couple of years to research his illness and deal with it in the best possible way.

Well aware of the fact that the clock was ticking, he returned to New Jersey where he focuses on trying to make a difference to the world we live in. Despite the fact that Ben is limited by pain and limited funds, he now spends days and sometimes entire nights writing music and lyrics that he hopes will carry his message of peace and the necessity for the resurrection of our dreams. He has also been working on writing a play that will carry the same message. He is hopeful to get it all produced in the next year.
